My Simple Steps to Not Overeat on a Road Trip

Tonight, I’m writing this post from a hotel.  I’m on a road trip with the family.  I eat during a road trip to stay awake while driving.  Its a bad habit, I know – but a lot of us do it.  Being faced with a long road trip, I had to figure out a new game plan.  At first, I started to think about ‘good’ food choices to eat while driving.  I had a lot of suggestions from twitter, facebook, family, and friends. Here are a few of them:

  • carrots
  • celery
  • grape tomatoes
  • cukes (which I found out are cucumbers)
  • apples
  • grapes
  • raisins

All great suggestions – well, not really – I think carrots and celery taste bad – and even though I like grape tomatoes, the way they squirt when you bite into them is a bit to gross for me!  The rest aren’t bad, but I’m a food addict – my problem isn’t that I eat ‘bad’ food – its that I eat too much food.  Bad food doesn’t help, but even good food in large quantity can be bad.  A mini-box of raisins has 42 calories and 33 carbs – 10 boxes of raisins are 420 calories.  I could easily eat 20 or 30 boxes of raisins during a long drive (not that I ever have).

As you see, being an over-eater, I can’t simply replace bad food with good.  I have to find other things to keep myself stimulated while on the road.  I’ve tried a few things like music and radio, and playing games with the family like “find the letters” (or whatever you guys call it when you find the letters of the alphabet in order on road signs, car tags, and the sides of truckers).  But those only last so long – and after the kids fall asleep and your spouse nods off after promising to keep you awake, its gets difficult.  My plan was simple and easy to duplicate and I hope it helps you guys too.  Here are the steps in order:

  • Get a hotel room
  • Go to sleep!

    I think that’s a great plan. I didn’t know that was an option for you the king of all nighters :o)

  2. ok- I got some “tips” for you… I really as joking about these but as much as we have problems some people have {at least to me} way worse problems… here’s some “pro-ana” tips I found:

    *Eat Ice cubes, they give you the feel like your eating something and the coldness can actually burn calories.

    *Drink ICE cold water, as I said before the ice will make your body work harder to keep your temp. up!

    *If you have hunger pains, curl up in a ball.

    *Take daily vitamins, if ya don’t you’ll be more hungry and it helps keep you looking good!

    *If you have a real bad craving for something that’s evil, Just taste it but don’t swallow! Enjoy every bite!

    *Take a cold shower.. you know why! 🙂

    *I Don’t know if you should/want to do this but if you have real bad hunger then drink one half of a liter to a liter of water. Fills you up but makes you look fat! The next day you’ll get rid of it not like that piece of bread that you had to calm the cravings!

    *Go take a nap.. you should get enough sleep! If you don’t get al least 6 hours then your appitite is increased by 15%!

    *If you love a certain food, save the wrappers even after you’ve eaten it. Smell it when you’re hungry.

    *Sit up straight. You’ll burn at least ten percent more calories sitting upright than reclining.

    *use kelp pills, it help boost metabolism.

    *Never eat anything bigger that you fist.

    *Drink 2tbsp of vinegar before the meal, so it well help suck out the fat out of it. Careful it may burn your mouth..

    *Go to the kitchen often, and pretend your snacking, take a bite out of something and take a long time, look in the fridge stuff like that. People will always think your eating!

    *Go Vegan or Vegetarian or just cut out red meat. Meat product’s have a lot of fat& sat. fat in them.

    *Have a peppermint, peppermints decrease hunger. Watch out.. 3 of those little things have 60 cals in them.

    Some of these wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t taken to such extremes. For example, I have heard that peppermint does satisfy a ‘dessert’ wanting after meals. So maybe pop one after a well-balanced meal. Also there’s that water again! Oh, and if you happen to not know what pro-ana is, it is pro-anorexia. It’s like our ying for our yang! But really anorexia and bulimia are sad.

    1. I think compulsive overeating is also sad… Over eating is the only addiction ‘disease’ that quitting the focus of the addiction (food) cold turkey leads to another addiction disease…
